The accidental patriot: how a teen’s school project became our flag
Since 1777, the American flag design has changed more than two dozen times. The first flag had 13 stripes and 13 stars. The flag today still flaunts 13 stripes but now includes 50 stars. There’s a fascinating tale about how the current United States flag came to be, and many might not know who designed it.
In 1958, 16-year-old Robert G. Heft from Lancaster, Ohio, took on a history class assignment to redesign the U.S. flag, anticipating the addition of Alaska and Hawaii as states. Using $2.87 worth of blue cloth and white iron-on material, he crafted a 50-star flag. His teacher awarded him a B-minus, noting the design lacked originality.
Unfazed, Heft sent his flag to President Dwight D. Eisenhower. To everyone’s surprise, Eisenhower selected Heft’s design as the new national flag. On July 4, 1960, the 50-star flag was officially adopted, and Heft’s grade was rightfully changed to an A.
Heft’s 50-star American flag was displayed for the first time at Fort Henry in Baltimore, Maryland. This ushered in a new era in which the United States would begin to display the 50 embroidered star, stitched stripes American flag rather than the earlier flag version with 13 stars.
