It’s not over! Seven summer adventures before Labor Day

Summer always seems to fly by in Northeast Wisconsin. Before the school buses roll and the leaves begin to turn, there’s still time to squeeze a little more fun out of the season. Here are seven great adventures to enjoy before Labor Day arrives:

  • Catch a Door County Sunset. Whether you’re at a waterfront park, beach, or scenic overlook, few things beat a summer sunset along the bay.
  • Explore a New Hiking Trail. From the Brown County Reforestation Camp to the Niagara Escarpment, Northeast Wisconsin offers miles of beautiful trails.
  • Visit a Farmers Market. August is peak season for sweet corn, tomatoes, berries and other fresh local produce.
  • Attend an Outdoor Concert. Many communities host free summer music series that make for a perfect evening out.
  • Go Kayaking or Paddleboarding. Experience local rivers, lakes and bays from a whole new perspective.
  • Watch the Perseid Meteor Shower. One of the year’s best meteor showers peaks in August. Find a dark location and enjoy the show.
  • Enjoy One Last Campfire. Gather family and friends, roast marshmallows, share stories and savor one of summer’s classic traditions.

The calendar may say summer is winding down, but there’s still plenty of time to make memories. Pick a few items from this list, get outside and make the most of every sunny day before autumn arrives!

The Summer of 1936: When Wisconsin sweltered

Think this summer has been hot? Imagine living through the legendary heat wave of 1936.

The summer of 1936 is still remembered as one of the hottest and most extreme weather events in Wisconsin history. It occurred during the Dust Bowl era, when much of the nation was suffering through drought, crop failures and record-breaking temperatures.

July was particularly brutal. Day after day, temperatures climbed into the 90s and above 100 degrees in many parts of Wisconsin. The state’s all-time record high temperature of 114 degrees was set on July 13, 1936, in Wisconsin Dells—a record that still stands nearly 90 years later.

Making matters worse, air conditioning was a luxury that few people enjoyed. Most homes relied on open windows, electric fans, shaded porches and cool drinks to survive the heat. Many families slept outdoors on porches or in yards to escape stifling nighttime temperatures.

The heat took a heavy toll on both people and agriculture. Crops withered in the fields, livestock struggled, and communities searched for ways to stay cool. Newspapers carried stories of residents flocking to lakes, rivers and swimming holes whenever possible.

For people in Northeast Wisconsin, relief often came from the cooling influence of Green Bay and Lake Michigan, but even those areas experienced unusually high temperatures during the historic summer.

Ironically, while the summer of 1936 was one of the hottest on record, the winter that followed was one of the coldest. Residents who endured the blistering heat soon found themselves battling frigid temperatures and heavy snow.

Today, when August temperatures rise into the 80s and 90s, it’s worth remembering that Wisconsinites have survived far worse. The next time you enjoy the comfort of a fan, air conditioner, or a cold glass of lemonade, be thankful you’re not trying to make it through the unforgettable summer of 1936!

Before summer slips away…

Hello friends and clients! Can you believe August is already here? It seems like just yesterday we were looking forward to backyard barbecues, family vacations, camping trips and long evenings spent outdoors. Now we’re all trying to squeeze every last drop of fun out of summer before Labor Day arrives.

While you’re busy checking items off your summer bucket list, there’s one thing you don’t want to overlook—your carpets.

Summer is wonderful for making memories, but it’s also tough on carpeting. Sand from the beach, dirt from hiking trails, grass clippings, pet traffic and extra foot traffic from family gatherings all have a way of finding their way indoors. Even if your carpets don’t look dirty, tiny abrasive particles can settle deep into the fibers and begin causing wear.

 Uh-oh, are those traffic lanes?

That’s when those familiar “traffic lanes” start to appear. Traffic lanes aren’t just a cosmetic issue. Over time, dirt and grit act like sandpaper, gradually wearing down carpet fibers and causing your carpet to look older than it really is. We’ve seen carpets that still look fantastic after many years because they were professionally maintained—and others that aged far too quickly because dirt was allowed to build up.
